HEMA, also known as Historical European Martial Arts, is based on historical combat manuals from the Medieval Period through the Renaissance.
CSHF primarily focuses on longsword. However, we spar and train other swords, such as saber, and rapier.
HEMA is a relatively new art with very old roots, having only been around in recent decades. Steel training swords are often modeled after surviving weapons in museums but also are made for the sport to be safely practiced in modern times. An example of this is a longer haft and longer cross to allow the use of heavier plastic gloves. Or having flexible blunt blades.
We absolutely do not use sharp weapons for sparring.
Your personal practice can pull as many elements from modern sport and history as you choose. Classes will provide drills that teach the historical plays and also highlight more modern concepts in sport. There are tournaments and an international ranking system, although we do not have an overseeing body or standardized rules.
While we wear protective gear to avoid debilitating or life-threatening injuries, HEMA is often meant to simulate unarmored combat. Although it is not a version of historical reenactment. There are some aspects of HEMA where armored combat is studied and sparred.
I have never participated in a sport, what if I am not strong enough? Aren't swords heavy?
Longswords weigh about 3-4 pounds. Some swords weigh less. You do not need to be an athlete to begin HEMA or practice it. While coming in as a seasoned athlete has advantages, everyone is capable of learning and developing fencing skills. We will meet you where you are, to provide you with the best experience for your goals and needs.
Intimidated by historical terminology?
Not a problem. We use simplified terms for easy digestion, while referencing the terminology of the systems used. If you want to get into the weeds of the terminology, you may, but it is not required. Learning a system of movements is a lot all by itself.
Within the discord there will be links to source material and videos from the HEMA community for your reference if you want to broaden your understanding outside of our structure. Questions are always welcome.
I don't have gear!
We have some loaner gear available that is provided with monthly payments or class payments. Although we strongly encourage you to get your own as soon as possible and are happy to assist you in choosing what is best for you and your budget. The entire kit does not need to be bought at once. We have a document complete with hyperlinks that we will provide upon sign up.
How can I be sure that I am growing my skills as a sword fighter?
This is a multidimensional question. We do not use an internal club ranking system but have sparring following each class where you may pressure test yourself within the confinements of safety. Ultimately, we want this to be both challenging and fun. There are tournaments held throughout the year outside of our school. Tournaments may be held internally, also.
